The central hypothesis of humanistic psychology is that the individual has within herself resources for self-understanding, for altering her self-concept, changing her attitudes and self-directing her behaviour. These resources can be tapped through skilful facilitation and a climate that promotes respect for the individual. Coaching depends on an equal partnership between client and coach. Given the qualities of humanistic psychology, it is easy to see why its precepts are central to current coaching practice.
